RECOVERY 2: NUTRITION

  • We cannot limit ourselves to external physical recovery. We must give the body what it needs and avoid what is harmful to it.
  • I summarise my recovery nutrition under 3 headings: Don’t eat badly, Eat well and Specific natural supplements.
  • In the recovery period, this is not the time to relax. It is the time to be stricter (even radical) in our nutrition.

The second key level for my recovery is nutrition.

This issue is fundamental throughout life, but especially in periods when the body needs all the energy and quality of nutrients it needs to recover from a major trauma.  It would be absurd to do only external physical recovery, and not provide the body with what it needs, while avoiding what harms it.

To try to simplify it, I summarise my approach in 3 sections.

The first two are useful forever, but are indispensable in these post-traumatic moments; and the third is specific to recovery:

  1. DON’T EAT BADLY. As the nutritionist Julio Basulto says, more important than “Eating well” is learning to “Not eat badly”. This is not so difficult, and it means avoiding a lot of crap that will inflame, oxidise, pollute, fatten and require a lot of energy. Avoid or minimise as much as possible all bad processed foods, sugar, white flour, dairy products, alcohol, chemical or sugary drinks (from cokes to bottled fruit juices), etc.
  2. EAT WELL: Have a balanced and conscious diet. With an adequate balance of calories, proteins, carbohydrates (whenever possible, wholegrain and/or gluten-free), lipids, fibre, minerals and vitamins. My food base is vegetarian, but everyone has their own preferences and formulations, but it is quite simple to have a minimum knowledge of proper nutrition, as long as we are willing to learn a little, become aware and question certain inertias or habits that keep us away from a complete and healthy diet. Pleasure should not be the absolute priority. That family or social tradition does not prevent us from opening up to what interests us. The more energetic and well nourished the body is, the more healing capacity it will have for a fracture, an illness or any kind of problem.
  3. SUPPLEMENTS: I regularly take some natural and high quality supplements, because our body needs many nutrients that are difficult to obtain from the normal diet. With the exception of the purely organic ones, today’s normal food has a very low ratio of nutrients to the same food a few decades ago. Nowadays, everything that is not strictly organic is grown on dead land (with hardly any nutrients), which is pumped full of fertilisers so that something can grow. But in the case of a recovery like mine, which requires good bone-building, I am more ambitious and demanding, and increase the dosage of supplements, targeting it specifically. My supplement menu for this recovery is as follows:
  • Vitamin C: for growth and repair of body tissues.
  • Easily absorbed essential amino acids (For protein and glycogen).
  • Calcium + Magnesium + Zinc: for bone and muscle maintenance/recovery.
  • Vitamin B12: For neuron and blood health.
  • VM75: Multivitamin with amino-chelated minerals, vitamins and rich in antioxidants.
  • Krill Pearls: Promotes circulation and bone health (among others).
  • Spirulina: Provides protein, fibre and multiple properties.
  • Curcumin: Among other things, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
  • Protein Shake: From time to time I have a shake/superfood of vegetable proteins, cocoa and papaya.

I only share this approach to nutrition so that we all become aware that it is essential to give importance to this issue in a process of recovery from injury or illness, and that with proper nutrition and supplementation, the whole process can be greatly improved. This is not the time to relax with food, and that we already have enough problems with our injury or illness, without worrying about eating well. It is time to be stricter (even radical) in our nutrition. Firstly because it will be fundamental for our recovery, and secondly because it can be a great opportunity to learn to eat better from an inopportune circumstance that has come upon us.

Disclaimer: This is only my opinion, and I organise my supplementation plan with expert advice. But I am not a nutritionist or a health professional in general. Each person should seek information and advice from the relevant professionals or experts if they do not have a good knowledge of nutrition themselves.
